Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a plant with a long history of traditional use, especially in various cultures of the Middle East and Central Asia to treat a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, pain, infections, and even as a stimulant.
The harmala alkaloids, particularly harmine and harmaline are MAO Inhibitors that can be viewed as natural anti-depressant and anti-anxiety alternatives. These alkaloids are also known to provide altered states of consciousness and to potentiate the effects of psychoactive substances.
